Japan Seeks Tariff Exemption For Capital Goods

The Japanese government has called for a waiver of Thai import tariffs for Japanese capital goods to replace the damaged ones at flooded factories in Thailand.

Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade & Industry Yukio Edano suggested the Thai government lift the import tariffs for machinery and equipment which will be shipped to Thailand to replace those damaged beyond repairs by flooding at the Japanese factories in Ayudhya and Patumtani.

Edano raised his demands while meeting with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister/Commerce Minister Kittirat na Ranong on Monday.

Japanese engineers and mechanics will shortly arrive to fix the broken machinery and malfunctiong systems at the submerged factories.

Kittirat was accompanying Virabongsa Ramangkura, head of the Strategic Committee for National Reconstruction and Future Build-up, on an official tour to Tokyo to reassure the Japanese government and private sector of the Thai government's sustained commitments to maintaining and promoting Japan's manufacturing industries and trade in Thailand.

Tokyo, which already contributed in cash and in kind to the Yingluck's flood relief efforts, also reconfirmed the Japanese will continue to assist in Bangkok's schemes to rebuild a post-flooding Thailand.
