American Envoy Meets With Yingluck

The United States’ ambassador to Bangkok Kristie Kenney held a private talk with Yingluck Shinawatra on Monday.

The Puea Thai Party’s top contender in Jul 3’s electoral contests called on Mrs Kenney at the latter's residence in Wireless Road to discuss Thailand’s political issues in addition to the nationwide race to parliament.

Ms Yingluck, who might possibly make herself the country’s first woman leader, said her meeting with Mrs Kenney was only a private schedule but declined to unveil the details.

The American woman diplomat has regularly sent messages on line to show the US government’s consistent support for democratic rule and freedom of expression, specifically in the media and other social networks.

Several European envoys earlier met with the youngest sister of former Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra to inquire and exchange views pertaining to the nationwide polls and related political matters.

The top European diplomats who are currently attached to Bangkok and earlier called on Ms Yingluck at the headquarters of the pro-Thaksin party included the United Kingdom’s ambassador Asif Ahmad who met with her twice in less than a one-week time.

Meanwhile, the Puea Thai candidate vying against caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for head of government confirmed her party has had no policy to seek amnesty for any politicians including her own brother, who has remained in self-exile overseas following 2006’s coup.

She dismissed news reports Mr Thaksin, who earlier announced his plan to come home by the end of this year, recently told a foreign correspondent amnesty might be granted following the electoral contests.

Neither has the Puea Thai Party adopted a plan to have her brother’s confiscated wealths returned as earlier alleged, she said.

Mr Abhisit repeatedly expressed his opposition to possibilities of either granting Mr Thaksin the amnesty, following his having been sentenced by court to a two-years jail involving the controversial Ratchada land lawsuit, or refunding him the confiscated assets only if he returned to power after Sunday’s polls.
