Gen Yudhasak Vows to Foster Govt-Military Ties

Gen Yudhasak Sasiprapa, tipped to take the defense seat in a Yingluck cabinet, pledged on Friday to make smooth relationships between the post-election government and military leaders.

The Puea Thai MP said he could act as a go-between for both the Puea Thai-led government under Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the top brass, given his long military career and once having performed as deputy defense minister.

The 74-year-old general made his comments amid speculation he be named defense minister though some military commanders might have found him not very fit for such a cabinet post.

The ex-deputy defense minister denied he had recently talked with some of the military officers who were once classmates of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra's Pre-cadet Class 10, due to their reported objection to possibilities of his being given the first seat of the defense portfolio.

Gen Yudhasak, who ran on the Puea Thai party list in Jul 3's electoral contests, said he would shortly meet with top military leaders if he was eventually named defense minister.
