Thaksin Calls For Revival of OTOP Industry

Thaksin Shinawatra suggested on Friday the Yingluck government revive the One Tambon - One Product industry, left unattended since the last several years.

Mr Thaksin, currently on his Japan tour until next Monday, stopped by a Japanese OTOP market during his visit to Tohoku region which was part of the coastal areas hit by a tsunami earlier this year.

Mr Thaksin said he was imitating the Japanese OTOP industry when he launched his OTOP version in Thailand nearly a decade ago. Now that the Puea Thai Party has become core of a post-election government, the OTOP industry should be promoted again, according to the former premier.

The OTOP industry primarily involves the manufacturing of indigenous, handmade goods and brings extra incomes to tambon-based villagers and other low-income earners in all parts of the country.

Like Japan's award-winning OTOPS, Thai OTOP goods with ''stars'' on their packages are expected to sell a lot more than no-star items, he added.
