Floodwaters to Subside In Next Few Days
Floodwaters in varied canals of Thailand's central provinces and Bangkok's northern and northwestern suburbs are believed to gradually ebb down in the next few days.
The waters in Chao Praya River and its canals throughout the submerged central region and the capital's suburbs will subside from Thursday after resistant sea tides in the Gulf of Thailand had lowered since Tuesday, according to Tongpleow Kongchand of the Irrigation Department.
More pumps will be set up along the canals to bail out a maximum volume of excessive waters from inundated areas into Chao Praya River, Bang Pakong River in Chachoengsao, east of Bangkok, and Tajean River in Samut Sakorn, west of the capital, before the sea tides are forecast to surge up again by the middle of this month, he said.
The waters in Klong Rapipat and Klong Rangsit have slightly subsided though those in Klong Hokwa remained relatively high, he said. More flowing waters from Klong Hokwa were being led into Bangkok's northern suburbs of Klong Samwa after Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had ordered for authorities to raise up the local watergate to streamline them down to Klong Saensaeb.
However, the authorities had set up more embankments and fixed broken ones along the canals for fears the flowing waters might probably flood up Bangchan and Ladkrabang industrial estates down below.
On the western side of the capital, more waters were coming down from Tawee Watana and Buddha Monton areas into Chao Praya River via Tawee Watana and Pasee Charoen canals. For fears of the waters spilling over either side of the country's largest river, the authorities were trying to divert them to Tajean River instead.
