The Puea Thai Party spent much less money than legally allowed to score a landslide victory in last July's nationwide polls, reported the Election Commission on Thursday.
The ruling party, loyal to former premier Thaksin Shinawatra and headed by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, was found to have spent 93.8 million baht on their party-based campaigns, though they had been legally allowed to use as much as 186 million baht in partisan campaign finance.
That compared to the 165.4 million baht spent up for the same purposes by the Democrat Party, which conceded defeat to the Puea Thai Party in the previous general election. The opposition party, headed by former premier Abhisit Vejjajiva, had been legally allowed to spend 187.5 million baht in partisan campaign finance, according to the polling agency.
Meanwhile, the Bhum Jai Thai Party, de facto headed by Newin Chidchob and currently part of the opposition bloc, spent 81.3 million baht for the same purposes, against a legal ceiling at 187.5 million baht, the Chat Thai Pattana Party, de facto headed by former premier Banharn Silpa-acha and part of the current coalition government, spent 59.8 million baht in partisan campaign finance, against a 186 million baht ceiling and the Chat Pattana Puea Pandin Party, de facto headed by Suvat Liptapallop and currently part of the coalition government, spent 57.1 million baht against a 184.5 million baht limit.
