Myanmar Rice Export Tipped to Double

Myanmar is speculated to export some 1.5 million tons of rice throughout this year, twice as much from last year, albeit uncomparable to the world-prevailing Thai rice.

According to the Myanmar Rice Industry Association, Myanmar's rice export volumes might probably rise above the earlier speculated level of 1.5 million tons this year. By 2015, Myanmar rice export might probably total up to three million tons.

That compared to an estimated 700,000 tons of the Myanmar rice exported to the world markets last year.

The increase in Myanmar's rice export volume has posed a trade rivalry to Thailand, currently the world's largest rice exporting country, Vietnam and India. Myanmar used to be the world's biggest rice exporter during the '60s.

Thailand was earlier expected to deliver an estimated seven million tons of rice to the world markets throughout this year. Thailand reportedly exported some 10.5 million tons, compared to Vietnam's 7.2 million tons, last year, according to the Thai Rice Exporters Association.

The speculated drop in volume of the Thai rice export was attributed to severe flooding which wreaked havoc to major rice-growing areas throughout the country's central region.
