Prayudh Assigned to Report On Pattani Killing

Yingluck Shinawatra instructed Gen Prayudh Chan-ocha on Tuesday to report on Sunday's tragedy in which four Muslim villagers were killed and four others injured by army rangers in Pattani.

The woman premier said the army chief will find out the truths and promptly report to her. Gen Prayudh will compile the results of the urgent probe into the incident in which the civilians who were riding in a pickup truck on a Pattani-Yala road were attacked by the rangers in Nong Jik district of the southernmost province.

The rangers had reportedly mistaken the villagers for armed insurgents and told them to pull over before they attacked them. The pickup truck was riddled with rifle bullets, leaving four of the nine villagers dead and the four others wounded.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Yuttasak Sasiprapa said the civilians were not insurgents or involved in suspected insurgency in the area though the army rangers claimed to have found one AK-47 rifle and one handgun on their truck.

A group of insurgents had attacked a rangers outpost in Nong Jik district before the rangers found and assailed the villagers on the road.

The deputy premier said justice will be served to all sides and those found involved in the killing of the civilians will be held responsible.

The local police, who were thwarted by the rangers on their way to the scene shortly after the incident occurred, are investigating the incident.
